Well ARNers,
The WASL initiative now officially exists. We've cleared all the state
hoops and have been granted a number, title, and the ok to move forward.
So let's move. The initiative states, in brief, that anyone running for
public office must take the tenth grade WASL (Washington Assessment of
Student Learning) and post their scores in the voters' pamphlet, and on
the secretary of state's web site. They don't have to pass, just take it
and post their scores. Pretty siimple premise. We are totally grass
roots. No money for campaigning much less private enrichment (sorry Tim).
We have petitions on-line that folks can download and then go out and get
signatures. The web site address is www.democracy.org/WASL.html.
Directions for the download etc. are there.
ARN can help in several ways. First, encourage anyone you know in
Washington State to go to the web site and to download petitions and to
gather those signatures. Second, write letters, make contact with media,
spread the word. If it's a good idea, take it to your state; if not, keep
the conversation going about the testing. We will really go as far as we,
the people will take it. Maybe they will begin to pay attention.
Andmaybe they'll be sharpening their number 2 pencils.
