Perhaps what you were seeing was an exercise in dry professorial humor, rather than philistinism or hypocrisy,
Even so, it has to be admitted that calling someone a philistine or hypocrite is much more attention-getting than calling someone a drily humorous professor. There is an abundant scholarly literature to support this.

C'mon, Geo. C'ham: could it be because, among polite company, it's the
*right* thing to do when you've mispoken--REGARDLESS about how self-declared
list Nanny's try to *standardize* the virtual discourse habits in cyberspace,
citing quite questionable *acceptable Nettiquette* (whatever that is that
distinguishes itself from ETiquette) and other borish *conventions*...
..and, besides, Geo. C'ham: doesn't propper *Netiquette* require that you post
ONLY to the offendig party and NOT the whole list? Philistine or Hypocrite?
(correct answer: BOTH)
Where, oh! where is the consistency between what the psychologist recommends
for others and what he allows for himself?
Physician: heal thyself... ;-} rap.
