I am way behind on my e-mails, so maybe this has already been discussed.
But did anyone catch comments about three weeks ago by John McCain suggesting
we need to run schools more like we run the military. He was specifically
talking about discipline, regimentation, etc. I caught only the tail end and a
segment of his remarks. What I heard frightened me. Sounded like he wanted
all schools to be functioning like military academies.

Diane,

I think that there is a huge opportunity to make major changes under a new
president.

I don't know Kelley and don't know where she heard his comments on charters
etc., but if you go to http://origin.barackobama.com/issues/education you
can see the formal statements. The initial comments are very general so be
sure to click on the link that takes you to his k-12 program. There is no
mention of charters. I have faulted him only for some unthinking repetition
of data that is meaningless in some instances and wrong in others (e.g., the
citing of Sputnik; we had a satellite capable rocket in the air over a year
before Sputnik, see the 17th Bracey Report in Kappan for details).

You need be fearful of Linda Darling-Hammond as an adviser only if you are
Wendy Kopp.
