Re: Jay Greene opines at WSJ
I don't think that "economist" necessarily means an allusion to BRT anymore
than "educational researcher" means an allusion to the NEA. Economists live
in a nearly hermetically sealed little world of their own and rarely cite
research outside that field.
Jay's ref. to "highest quality studies" no doubt refers to the economists
cited. The USDOE studies (which is probably what Monty sent) and those done
by educational researchers would not qualify.

Here are some key lines:
“Florida State economist Tim Sass...”
“Stanford economist Caroline Hoxby...”
“Harvard economist Tom Kane...”
-Uh, I don’t see any educators that have done these “studies”. When I see
“economist” it makes me think Business Roundtable. The author ignores other
studies that show his comparisons to be wrong.
"a union-political-educational complex that is trying to halt progress and
put the interests of adults above the interests of children."
-Halt “progress”? This statement is a flat out lie. Many charters are not
there for the “interests of children”. They are there for profit, as a
recent report just demonstrated. The “progress” being made is towards
destroying public schools in any manner possible. And if kids have to be in
a lottery system to get in the so-called ‘best’ schools, what kind of system
is that? The poorest kids with the lowest chance of transportation and
parent involvement will once again be left out, just like New Orleans.
“The highest quality studies have consistently shown that students learn
more in charter schools.”
Not so. Monty sent a study a while ago showing performance was nearly the
same if not better in public schools. (maybe somebody has that link?)

and if we do not quickly get a strong, point by point rebuttal, out, this
will be used to pound not only on teachers' unions, but on anyone opposing
the rightwing agenda on privatization
