The "hitting teacher" is interesting and i will look into it. Anyone still
thinking that the Japanese secondary school has something to offer should
read Paul George's "The Japanese Secondary School: An Inside Look,"
published jointly by NASSP and NMSA. Paul had a unique opportunity to
observe a group of Japanese students as 7th graders and as seniors. He was
appalled by what he saw at the senior level.
At a more conrete level, Mary Jordan, former education writer for the
Washington Post, had this to report from her position with the foreign
bureau:
"When Tomuchi Jinnouchi died of brain injuries suffered at the hands of her
homeroom teacher, 75,000 Japanese signed a petition supporting the teacher.
People all over the country supported the teacher who said that "educational
motives" caused him to slam the girl headfirst into a stone pillar because
her skirt was shorter than school regulations permitted.
Teachers regularly slam students' heads on desk....etc.
Tomomi's father still receives phone calls saying "If your daughter had been
obedient, she wouldn't be dead.
