Susan,
I'm delighted to hear you laud this book, which few people seem to know.
Reading it was a transformative experience for me, and I've been a
"test-defier" (to use Michelle's great phrase) ever since.
The "Data Gathering Profile" in the book is one of the richest, most useful
resources I've ever seen. It makes graphic so much of what I sensed about
assessment that informs instruction (the only kind that I care about) but
couldn't quite get my mind around until Johnston laid it all out for me. I
also taught myself to do running records with the chapters co-authored by
Marie Clay and the tapes that used to (and might still) accompany the book.
Subsequent editions have a different title, which escapes me at the moment.
Johnston also was a primary author of NCTE's Guidelines for the Assessment
of Reading and Writing which still reads like a manifesto to me.
