Art,
No, I think one of your critics hit right on the head. Supporters of NCLB do so because of disturbed childhoods.

I do not know what is more preposterous - arithmetic that claims that
seven or eight equals one, the notion, that "reason," "evidence,"
"facts," and "logic" somehow automatically accrue to "liberals,"
"intellectuals," and "teachers," or the notion that people who disagree
with your politicall, economic, and educational views are deficient in
"heart." Can anybody wonder why a thoughtful critic would label what
he finds here as "howling at the moon?" Problem with his heart, right?
Tool of the vast, right-wing conspriracy, right?

I had cached over 140 messages from Art Burke on my computer. Last
night I read and deleted 128 one-liners. Actually, some were six or
eight lines, but their sentiment and intellectual content were similar
to the messages that were literally only one line.
A couple of the messages raised points that, from another writer,
would have merited serious responses. But reading so many of Art's
posts at once made it clear that he is almost never serious. Many of
the participants on this list are liberals, intellectuals or teachers -
sometimes all three. Members of these groups tend to believe that minds
can be changed through reason and evidence. But verbal facility can
also be used to resist the clear implications of facts and logic.
Without a well-developed heart, a man is less than fully human. Where
is the heart in the many hundreds of missives Art has launched in our
direction over the years? Anyone may claim to support equal
opportunity. In fact, nearly all reactionaries today do so claim. Their
actions should be judged not by their claims but by their results.

"We are confronted with the fierce urgency of NOW. In this unfolding
conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late.
This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous
and positive action."
