ETS has created a video, "How Standardized Tests Help Children Learn,"
which they have mailed to some teachers in the Sacramento area.
* Why do we need standardized tests?
* How can these tests help teachers and parents help students learn?
* How do we help students prepare for standardized tests?
* How do we avoid having to teach to the test?
* How should test results be used?
* How do we make tests more helpful?
All these questions appear on a tri-fold cardboard mailer enclosed with the
video, together with the following text:

"www.ets.org/testing. Log on. Let's talk. Learn how standardized tests can
improve our children's education."

*
"With more calls for school testing--and more questions about how tests
help kids learn, it's time for America's teachers to talk with test makers
about standardized tests and the role they play in our schools. This video
is a record of that conversation."

*
"Everyone wants--and needs--to know why tests are important, how the
results are used, and how best to prepare. To get answers, ETS combined its
expertise with that of testing experts, educators, and PTA leaders to share
resources with teachers about how standardized tests help kids learn.

"ETS believes tests can help teachers better serve America's kids, and this
video offers real tools for teachers: insight about how tests are made,
facts about how results are used, tools that help teachers and students
prepare, and guides to finding the right use for standardized tests in schools.

"We invite you to visit www.ets.org/testing to learn more and share your
thoughts about testing, or let ETS send you more information by mailing in
the attached response card."

*
"Although ETS is the world leader in educational measurement, our mission
goes far beyond testing alone. We are committed to making schools better
for all children, by working with teachers to develop the tools they need
to help our children learn."

Speak the truth and all nature and all spirits help you with unexpected
furtherance. Speak the truth, and all things alive or brute are vouchers,
and the very roots of the grass underground there, do seem to stir and move
bear you witness. ....[But speak the truth] and the worlds, time, space,
eternity, do seem to break out into joy.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
