Eric ... What choice do you think "schools" have in refusing "state" and "federal" funds? And what other ways are there for funding public schools? I'm curious as to what you think is going on here.

Art,

I didn't say *all* public funds. I said state and federal. Big bucks
with big strings, an abdication of control to Big Bureaucracy. Good for
facilities and materials and salaries, bad for freedom and learning.

It is because most public schools are dependent on state and federal money
that they can be coerced into transforming themselves into test-prep
centers. People feel they have no choice. But they do!

There might be lots of interesting ways to marshall public support for
education, to generate necessary revenue and other support, but no
innovation in that regard will happen as long as the bucks are flowing
from the state capital or from washington.
