I want to follow on to Leo's excellent post (although I should be in bed with my horrible cold)


Tonight while channel surfing I came across an event on CSPAN from the CATO institute (I wonder how that Roman stateman would react to the misuse of his name?) where David Boas was introducing an author of a book they put out which argues that the New Deal prolonged the Depression.

You can see a pattern

dismantle the New Deal as much as possible

try to discredit it

even remove FDR from the dime and replace him with reagan (although Nancy disagrees)

Karl Rove's hero is Mark Hanna, and there is no doubt that in many ways the Bush adminstration is McKinely redux, or even Grant (gilded Age, cowtowing to corporate interests) ... a period that ending in the corporate abuses of the Harding Administration.  it's amazing how T Roosevelt ever managed to slip in there....

this nation is at a serious crossroads.  After being publicly chastised for his attempts at Patriot Act II ashcroft has chpped it up and has willing accomplices in the Congress slip it into bills in coference commitee, and then it gets voted on by voice vogte so there is no accounatability   -  in case you didn't know, the FBI no longer needs warrants to examine just about any financial or related record they want to, and like with the Librarians, the institutions are forbidden to tell you that your records have been examined.   Since Ashcroft has already made clear in public statements that anyone who oppoed the president is in his mine giving aid and comfort to terrorists, we who criticize the president on anything or actively work for his political opponenets (as I do by volunteering for Dean) is automatically suspect.

So we have the worst of all worlds.   A corrupt administration, which believes its onw hyperbolic rhetoric, that believes in unleashing coporate inerests with no government oversight, that has arrogated to itself not only an unrestricted right to wage war on whomever it pleases, but absolute and unchecked police powers to suppress its critics.  All that's left is for the government to cancel any future elections that it thinnks it might lose on the grounds of national emergency  -- after all, Tommy franks said that if we were attacked with WMD, we might have to suspend the Constitution, and go under military rule, and there was no screaming on TV or in the newspapers.

Funny, maybe its because my last name is Jewish, but this soudns an awful lot like 1930's Germany to me.  So when I disappear, maybe you will know why?

Sorry to be so depressing, and I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories, but I fear greatly for our nation.
