Other union locals should conduct speakouts or forums. As Susan suggests,
school boards could be involved (as has happened around state testing in
some communites in MA) - co-sponsoring events with teachers (and other
groups, such as religious and civil rights) or holding their own. The goals
are to educate around the consequences of NCLB and build support for actions
leading to overhauling federal law - a quite different ESEA in various
critical regards, including testing and the accountability structure.

Heres what the union is doing in NYC. The UFT is a member of the AFT, which
is way more conservative than NEA. This is a great precedent.
Lets ask each of our locals to hold speak-outs. Then lets ask our local
school boards to hold some.

UFT’S NEXT STEPS TO EXAMINE TESTING/ASSESSMENT ISSUES:
The UFT is scheduling speak-outs in each borough to give members the
opportunity to express how the current NYC interim testing policies
and NYS Regents exams are impacting on their classrooms.
We must make sure that we have teachers and parents at each of these
UFT borough events to speak out about the problems with NYC and state
standardized assessments. These meetings offer Consortium members an
opportunity to describe far more effective alternatives to the state
testing
that is being imposed on students and teachers.
