On a lighter note, Chicago continued to parody itself in December. First, we
(Substance) finally published our article on the CPS annual calendar, which
has April 2007 with 31 days. That's now in print, so I'm not scooping myself.

But even more bizarre is the Chicago "Achievement Gap Essay Contest."

Here is the scoop:

On January 17, 2007, at the Oak Lawn Hilton, 9333 S. Cicero Ave, Oak Lawn,
Illinois, Katy Haycock of the Education Trust will address the "4th Annual
Chicago High School Principals Mini-Conference" on "Closing the Achievement Gap:
Whatever It Takes."

The event includes an essay contest for high school students, who have been
ordered to write an essay (500 words or less) on the following topic:

"How has my principal supported students in my school in closing the
achievement gap?"

According to the handout by the "Area 24 Office" of Chicago's public schools,
"The mini-conference student panel participants will be selected from the
winning essays."

You will not find this information on the CPS website but for further
information you can contact Pamela Randall, Area Instruction Officer, Area 24 Office,
10541 S. Aberdeen St., Chicago, IL 60628.

By the way, I always thought Ms. Haycock spelled her first name "Katy".
Anyone know for sure?
