Does anyone know what the time frame is for getting information to Mary Ginley? I'd like to really promote this, but would need to provide some sort of deadline.

Mary Ginley is a former Massachusetts Teacher of the Year from western Mass--who taught for years on both sides of the spectrum in Holyoke and Longmeadow. She became an activist against high stakes testing when MCAS was first introduced and helped co-found western Mass CARE. After "retiring" from teaching in Massachusetts two years ago, she moved to Florida where she has since been teaching--and experiencing first hand the effects of FCAT.

We are most fortunate that she has been chosen to participate on this panel--and I sincerely hope that each of us -- activists and lurkers on the CARE site, will step forward and share our experiences, and suggestions. The very idea that teachers are being asked (finally) to contribute to what may be a forward- thinking new direction, is possibly the most heartening move we have seen since 1993.

Exciting times...Democrats in charge of Congress and NCLB up for renewal. I think I see a glimmer of light at the end of a long, long tunnel.

Dennis Fehr, advisor to Nancy Pelosi on education issues, has, at her request, formed a National Education Task Force and I have been asked to join this group. I spoke at length with him today and found out a few things.

First, the group is small and has some big names (David Berliner and Linda Darling-Hammond, for example) but Nancy wants actual teachers' voices to be heard.

Next, the first order of business is to take a hard look at NCLB.

My first assignment is two-fold:

1. Collect stories: What has NCLB done to you as a teacher? to your students? to your school? to your colleagues? They are looking for honest stories and will not need your name but will need the name of the school and town. ...how has NCLB impacted you and people you know? how has it changed the way you teach? the way your students learn? the emotional climate in the classroom? etc?

2. Collect specific suggestions: Assuming funding were in place, how would you determine the effectiveness of a program, a school, a district other than high stakes testing? How would you decide if students knew what they should know to graduate? How would you ensure that "no child was left behind", that we really did provide equal access to the American dream and how would you prove it?

If funding were NOT in place, how would you go about doing it?
