Dear Emily,
If you'd like to read an interesting and powerful perspective, you
might try Reuven Feuerstein, from Israel. He writes a lot about testing
which appears in some prominent education journals, including Educational
Leadership. His perspective is based on Vygotsky, and is called Dynamic
Assessment. Here, the focus is NOT on assessing what a person knows, but
rather in gauging where they are currently engaged, and could use a hand. It
is much more informative to teachers and hopeful for students who may not
have been taught for a variety of reasons. I know that ETS (the makers of
the SAT) had been in touch with him to see if they could alter the SAT in
some way to reflect this perspective, but nothing came of it. Hope this is
helpful.
