Hi Deanna,
I, too, have heard Jaime Escalante speak, and I must say he's
changed a lot since the days when he was a teacher in LA, so I'd rather
focus on the issue of the racism in the movie, specifically the racism
implicit in the part where the test makers insisted that there had to be
cheating since so many of the "Latino" students did so well, i.e. so much
better than they were supposed to do.
