LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES
COLLEGE OF SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Center
for Latin American Studies (
http://las.arizona.edu) at the
University of Arizona, a Title VI-funded National Resource
Center on Latin America, invite applications for a full-time, 12-
month professional staff position as a program coordinator for
outreach activities. Position responsibilities will include both
Center and College- based activities. The candidate will work
closely with the Director and with college and program staff in
coordinating K-12 teacher training and outreach activities
directed to schools, community colleges, businesses, the media,
and the public.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Latin American Area Center
-- Act as liaison to the educational community both locally and
regionally to promote the study of Latin America at the K-12
and post-secondary level
-- Manage a curriculum resource and video-lending library and
coordinate the acquisition of new materials
-- Coordinate the organization of professional development
activities for educators
-- Organize special public events sponsored by the Center
during the academic year and summer
-- Edit the Center newsletter
-- Assist in the development and coordination of multimedia and
Web based modules and software for teaching high school and
general education courses on social sciences, culture and the arts
in Latin America
-- Coordinate grant-related activities with the Center's
consortium partner at Arizona State University and with the
business community and media
College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
-- Work with Social and Behavioral Science Dean's Office in
the planning, implementation and coordination of a small
Master's Degree Program in Social Science for K- 12
educators.
-- Serve as program advisor to students in the MA program.
-- Assist the college in curriculum planning for pre- service K-12
teachers, and in outreach and coordination with K-12 schools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree preferred; Master's or Bachelor's Degree in
Latin American Studies, Spanish, Education (Foreign Languages
or Social Studies), or related field; teaching, curriculum
development, and/or educational outreach experience;
demonstrated public speaking and writing skills; proficiency in
Spanish; work or study experience in Latin America preferred;
some knowledge of Portuguese desirable; and computer skills
including word processing, desktop publishing, and web
experience highly desirable.
Salary: at least $30,000 plus benefits
Deadline for receipt of applications: Applications will be
reviewed beginning on Feb. 16, 2001 but the position will
remain open until filled.
