Howdy
Back from Austin...
We started the day at Texas Education Agency, then walked to the capitol
around noon after sitting through some BS in the SBE committee room. Our
small band of 3 grew to 10 on the front steps of the capitol.
Carol was interviewed by a San Antonio reporter and CBS came out also & took
pictures of us, interviewed Carol, and then ran a 4 minute segment on the
5:00 news featuring TAAS.Carol carefully articulated the reasons why TAAS
and high stakes tests are ruining education. Though I haven't yet seen the
tape, my sister in Austin told me it tied in Carol's interview with clips
from the 60 minutes broadcast, and others, including Ms. O'Brien, who are
working across the country to fight high stakes testing. It was stated that
teachers and parents across the country were mobilizing to stop these tests.
(Maybe give some teachers a shot of courage to step out?)
So it was worth the trip.
One of the most concise & genuine responses we heard as we walked to the
capitol with our signs was a yell from a high school student as he drove by
- "TAAS Sucks". Many others saw our signs & stopped for buttons & a
discussion. Though I was not ready for an interview with the media, I was
happy to talk one on one with everyone I met. People were so receptive &
reactions were all favorable.
Juanita, you are absolutely right about these buttons. They work like a
magic bullet. Darndest thing I've ever seen. The sheriff on the capitol
steps informing us of the rules for protesting even got a No Mas TAAS
button. You should have seen his smile. Turns out his wife is a teacher &
she resents TAAS too.
I am working on sending some great photos ASAP
Becky
