The Education Committees are hearing some very important bills this coming
week. The schedule is below. More detailed information on two of the bills
is provided following the schedule.

This excellent bill would require that the writing portion of the scored
WASL be returned to the school for review by the parent, classroom teacher,
and the student. This is one of CURE's main agenda items for the session.
While we would like to see it include all of the WASL, this is a good first
step. Last year, this bill passed the House unanimously. It died in the
Senate Education committee. Please try to testify on behalf of this bill.

***HB1562/SB5625
These are identical, 33-page, companion bills, being heard on the same day
in back-to-back hearings. They implement the recommendations of the
Compliance (A+) Commission. These are EXTREMELY BAD bills. If the
recommendations become law, A+ will have the power to force schools into the
accountability system. They will be able to remove a school from its
district's jurisdiction, fire teachers , administrators, etc., usurp the
responsibilities of the duly elected school board ... It goes on and on.
The basis for their actions will be a school's (or district's) performance
on the WASL -- a subjective, unreliable, and invalid measure of student
performance. Please take immediate action!
