Marilyn Rittmeyer buys into the notion that standardized test scores are
"objective" measures of learning. She wants some sort of standardized basis
for comparing schools across the country, allegedly so parents can really
know how good the schools in their neighborhood are compared to others
across the country. I think Victor recounted an earlier experience with
Marilyn on what he called the "I hate everyday math" list; she is also
probably still lurking on the Educationnews Bulletin Board, after having
spent some time trading messages there with me and others. Unfortunately,
the board has been whitewashed so there is no record there of her postings.
Too bad. Personally, I'm interested in viewing a school from the
perspective of how much they can do for my child, and for all the other
children who attend, rather than from the perspective of how they stack up
test-score wise with other schools.
You can find out plenty about so-called "value added" accountability by
going to the ARN archives and searching for Sanders and Value.
