Don't know about the testing. Most research and experience does not support holding k'garten kids back. However, I believe the practice of providing a "transitional" year between kindergarten and first grade is increasing.

Anyone know how widespread the practice of testing reading skills for
kindergarten exit is?

I have a mom ready to fight it-- pass the reading test or stay in
kindergarten.

Thanks,
Juanita
