Just want to remind everyone that in some parts this is not new...we moved
to California in 1983 when my son was a year old and by the time we got
settled in a community it was a year and 1/2 later when I started to think
about pre-school or nursery school or whatever for him - my daughter was in
kindergarten...my husband was working with a consultant who had a couple of
kids - older than mine - who said she'd be happy to have lunch with me to
talk about pre-school programs in the area so I would have an idea where to
begin...at lunch, the one thing I remember clearly was that she said it was
too bad that Paul was so "old" - 2 1/2 at that point - because I couldn't
get him into a particular pre-school because you had to register when the
baby was in the womb! I was so appalled - but I think I hid it well - and
thankful that we missed that one! My son went to a cooperative nursery
school - had the best teacher ever who allowed each child to experience and
grow at his/her own rate (taught me a ton too about parenting, etc.) and I
still think about that conversation whenever these conversations start on
the list -- I don't mean to disparage anyone's parenting but to think that
one has to enroll a kid in a pre-school program before he/she is even born
is almost too much to bear...
