This issue is critical. In NY, ALL tests other than English Language Arts are reading tests FIRST. The math tests have become convoluted word problems. When the embargo is up (end of February) I'll be making copies available. Social Studies and Science... the same. One of the reasons I like the CRESST requirements for standardized testing is that this point is specifically addressed.

Is there any truth to the rumor that nobody passed the math section of the WASL this year unless they also passed the reading section? I heard from a Washington Education Association member that in her district the pass rate for reading was over 60% but for math it was under 40%.

I'll have to see what I can find out, George, but I would assume that if one does not pass reading that they have a snowball's chance of passing the math. In the first year of WASL, the 4th grade math was said to require a 6th grade reading ability.
