I've known Tom for about 45 years -- we were hs classmates. We had a discussion about the problems with NCLB at our 40th reunion, and at that time he said "That means you're opposed to everything I stand for." I told him he could take it any way he wanted to, but that it was a bad law, and that the emphasis on tests the way it was wold distort education in a very negative fashion.

I sincerely doubt that my words had nay effect upon him. I think he got bitten by the reality that almost all of his schools, by the way you have to account for subgroups, were suddenly going to appear as not performing adequately, and this would be on his watch.
