States have the option of requiring science scores (or anything else) and 
some have done so or will do so. NCLB does not require high stakes for 
science results, but if a state chooses to add them to the accountability 
mix, it can only count against schools - that is, good science scores will 
not balance weaker reading or math scores, but weak science scores causes a 
school to be labeled a failure (oops, INOI).
