Assessment reformers may be interested in a recent post "Response to
Hegedus (was pre-to-post tests as measures of learning/teaching)"
[Hake (2008)].
The abstract reads:

ABSTRACT: Stephen Hegedus, in his response to my post "pre-to-post
tests as measures of learning/teaching," raised three points -
Hegedus (1) uses "Hake's gain as a measure of what knowledge was
learned relative to prior knowledge"; (2) implies that, for
"comparison groups," the term "controls" should be reserved for
Randomized Control Trials (RCT's); and (3) states that: "Any pre-post
test used as an outcome measure in any serious implementation study
is often complemented by other process measures to study fidelity of
implementation in a comparison group." I attempt to address those
three points in this post.
