Doug,
I agree wholeheartedly. The teachers/administrators/board members worked
together to fight both of the voucher propositions in California and won
handily both times. It seems to me that if we can get past our
"differences" and realize that ALL of our interests in public education are
being attacked, we would be a lot more successful. I only put in my caveat
because I do understand, I think, how teachers feel - they identify so
strongly with the criticism about public schools that I really don't want to
add any more fuel to that fire. Of course, school boards come under some of
the same kind of criticism and I must admit, there are times that some of my
colleagues on boards do things that make me shudder - but that's the way it
is in most things I suspect - some really good, some really bad and a great
deal in the middle!
Thanks - we'll keep trying.
karen

Karen,
I would never react negatively to something that someone observes (I hope
I wouldn't), and I agree that teacher's unions have been awful in this
area, much to my frustration. If we can help school board members to be
more savvy about what the tests really are and what they do (and it sounds
like many are already way ahead of the curve on this) then they can speak
out more effectively. We need to do the same within unions, and to work
together to educate the public.
Doug
