Not in my dictionary. Standards for construction and
engineering set minima (or maxima), not averages. You
wouldn't want to fly in an airplane, or eat packaged
foods, etc., if the standards-setting bodies set averages. >>
Well, my dictionary says, "standard 1. something considered by an authority
or by general consent as a basis for comparison." (according to Washington
OSPI, we aren't setting up a competition, so we wouldn't want to compare
schools districts or kids, but this is what ends up happening with their
little map with district who "met the goal for improvement shaded one color
and those who didn't shaded another color)" 2. an object regarded as the most
common size or form of its kind" (obviously the 80% who fail WASL would be
more "standard" than the 20% who pass, in this definition) skip to "4. an
average or normal quality, quantity, or level" (as in, the standard cost of
WASL is $26 per test) I like "13. a flag or emblematic figure used as a
rallying point for an army, fleet, etc." (as in Rally round the WASL kids!)
And how do you know Jesus didn't have a high school diploma? My theory is:
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John simply choose to leave that part out of the
narration, because a diploma wasn't worth the paper it was written on then
either! Or maybe Jesus failed to meet standard on the GATT Gallilean
Assessment of Teachers of Truth (obviously in this case the test was flawed)
and was denied his diploma as well as his National Board Certification by the
lawyers and Pharisees of the day.
