And it also assumes you have a car and that MPG means something to you so
that you would want to know how to calculate it.

The Nazi examples might be extreme, but they directly address George C's
question. In addition there are plenty of math problems that don't look
political because we don't question the societal assumptions they rest
on. Thus, math problems involving the calculations of miles per gallon
by cars rest on the assumption that using fossil fuels is good and that
there will always be plenty of them.
More political is a math series that I have seen only a few examples
from, but which conservatives refer to as "Rainforest Math" because of
the number of PC environmental questions in them.
