Happy Saturday morning, colleagues!
You looked good in Education Week, Mickey! I just wish they'd have had your
kids in the shot, too.
Back to bumpers and buttons...
We live in one of the arguably more conservative wards in Chicago (45th Ward,
Northwest Side), run by Pat Levar (alderman) and the Lyons family (various
jobs in the organization, from ward committeeman to state reps, etc.).
Politically, these guys are as traditional as Democrats get. Both would have
been at home in Jersey City, Kansas City, Brooklyn or Boston in 1940.
We also live on a fairly conservative block (albeit with the Faith Apostolic
Temple right under Bishop Jackson happily on the corner -- in what was a Lu
theran church until most of the Lutherans apparently fled to the suburbs and
the Pentecostals bought the property).
And we don't generally hang out in the Volvo and Organic Food areas of
Chicago and suburbs.
In fact, I think our passport to certain fashionable neighborhoods may have
been revoked.
Anyway...
On the left side of my car's rear bumper is "My child is more than a test
score" (available from NCTE). On the right side is "Nader LaDuke" (no longer
available).
A block east of us is a pickup truck with "Nader LaDuke" on the bumper, too.
I've had the conversations Mickey talks about. And all of the rear view
mirror action up here has been positive. And many of the cops (the
ran-and-file of whose union just rejected a Daley administration contract
offer by a vote of 2 to 1) seem to love both.
You might not want to get one of those green collectors' item bumper
stickers, but the NCTE "My child is more than a test score..." one is widely
available:
www.ncte.org
And whenever you get discouraged, there is always
www.fairtest.org
And Juanita's buttons are wonderful, for those who haven't seen them. Thanks,
Juanita.
Happy Saturday. I've got to go to Home Depot this morning
...but I'll never shop at Wal Mart.
George Schmidt
