Oral reading rates measure how fast a person reads aloud. The last I heard, brains work more quickly than mouths, so once we are reading--say by 4th grade (?)--, we always read faster to ourselves than we do aloud.

Does anyone know exactly what oral reading rates measure? I can see how it would correlate and/or measure fluency, auditory processing, word recognition (in context), vocabulary. What else do oral reading rates measure?
Thanks,
