President Bush says,
"Our reforms will not be complete until every child in America has an equal
chance to succeed"
And I say, fine, when do we start the reform? When do we get back on track
towards equal educational opportunity for all, as he insists we must? When
are the politicians going to step beyond hollow rhetoric and provide the
means and resources so that every child has the educational opportunities
that the children of privelege now enjoy?
Instead of meaningless blather about 40 percent increases in chronically
underfunded programs, why not pledge to fully fund IDEA for a start? And
then look realistically at how much money is needed to equalize opportunity
for the neediest children, equal to the opportunities afforded the children
of the wealthy, like Mr. Bush himself? Or how about reversing the trend in
prison spending and education spending (increase education spending over the
next ten years at the rate at which prison spending has increased in the
last decade, and vice versa).
We need leadership. Instead we get Bush-league educational policy.
