The Phonics movement and standards are actually two movements that
have intersected - the original standards movement was based on fuzzy
math and whole language, and still is in most states.

This is from Checker Finn's 'Gadfly' email newsletter praising the departing
Marian Joseph. She has been in the forefront of the insane so-called
standards in CA (that Susan Ohanian has so well skewered), phonics first
last and aways programs, math as rules not thinking, heavy handed testing,
and who knows what else. I suppose it would be lunacy to believe Gray Davis
would appoint anyone any good to the Board, but he'll have to outdo himself
to find someone worse.
