4th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
TEACHER EDUCATION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Dates: 12-14 January 2007
Location: University of Illinois-Chicago, U.S.A.

Conference Overview

What does it mean to prepare teachers to teach toward social justice? Across the
United States and around the world, educators face many challenges. Especially
troublesome are the economic, social, and political contexts that make
difficult our attempts to address differences and oppressions in schools and
society. Yet, in the face of these challenges, teacher educators are continuing
to produce significant theories, practices, and coalitions. The 4th Annual
Conference on Teacher Education and Social Justice will offer rare
opportunities to discuss cutting-edge research, develop innovative resources,
build networks, and explore possibilities for new directions in teacher
preparation with a diverse group of educators who share commitments and
priorities.

Conference Themes

(A) Initiatives From the Right

The Conference will open with a presentation by the Director of CAOE on recent
initiatives from the Right on such policy issues as funding, censorship, and
teacher certification, and will focus on why politicians and the general public
seem swayed by these initiatives, and how the Left can be proactive in advancing
equity and justice. Featured sessions will expand this topic with analyses of
other initiatives as well as anti-oppressive responses and resources.

(B) Innovations in Teacher-Education Curriculum Design

The Conference will highlight the innovative ways that teacher educators are
preparing pre-service teachers to teach towards social justice. Featured
sessions will describe, analyze, and model the ways that teacher educators are
challenging oppressions and advancing social justice in the various courses
found in teacher-preparation programs today, from courses on educational
foundations to courses on curriculum and methods in the subject areas. These
sessions will also provide handouts of conceptual, curricular, and cultural
resources for re-designing curriculum and instruction in teacher preparation.
Several of the presentations will showcase the groundbreaking and comprehensive
Teacher Education Curriculum Resource Book that is currently being developed by
CAOE.

Other Special Features of the Conference

Post-Conference Workshop on Publishing for Emerging Scholars: Designed for
emerging scholars (graduate students and recent graduates) in the field of
teacher education and social justice, this three-hour workshop offers
invaluable tips and unravels the "unspoken rules" on publishing books and
journal articles. Facilitated by the Director of CAOE, this popular workshop is
free with conference pre-registration and is scheduled for Sunday afternoon,
January 14th. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served
basis. Information on registering for this workshop will be included on the
Pre-Registration Form.

Book Sale and Signing: Save space in your bags for essential books and resources
for educators, available at the Conference Booksale, run by Teaching for Change
and Rethinking Schools. Leading scholars in the field of education and social
justice will be on hand for a special booksigning session on Friday evening,
including William Ayers, Stacey Horn, Amanda Lewis, Pauline Lipman, Larry
Nucci, William Schubert, William Watkins, and others!

Networking Reception: A highlight of previous conferences, the Networking
Reception provides an opportunity to meet other conference participants in an
informal setting with light refreshments and light-hearted entertainment.
Scheduled for Friday evening, immediately following the opening plenary
session.
