Michigan Ave. Chicago, IL 60611 Mike Martinez, Education Reporter 312-222-6155 The Tribune Corporation owns the LA Times, Newsday, and a host of smaller publications (including the Orlando Sentinal). Their news service has enormous impact. They are now producing a daily Web "newspaper" that never sees print! Their Website (like Education Week's) contributes to the illusion of what is official history. They have to be held to covering the news. Often, they spin on behalf of the Testocracy. For example, on May 23, 2000, PURE held a press conference and OSC demonstrated outside school board headquarters against the tests here in Chicago. OSC reps (including LaShona Shavers, who participated in the March 31 Columbia University conference) met with Paul Vallas for two hours. The TV reporters waited outside Board headquarters for two hours while the meeting went on inside. But the print media ignored the event. When the students came outside, they were interviewed by the TV people. When the students had left, then Vallas held a press conference to disagree with the "kids." He held forth at 7:20 p.m. that evening (after everyone else had left the area in front of our school board HQ). The TV news stations all covered those stories (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox) -- except WGN (the Tribune station). And the next day no news appeared about either activity in the Chicago Tribune. Nor did the Sun-Times cover the activity. Literally, the stuff was blacked out in the print media for more than 36 hours here. So let's keep on these people, but let's not forget that their version of reality is no more accurate than others. They just have a lot more people who believe them, even when they spin for power and wealth. Thanks for the enormous help. We could add others, but this is enough.
