Susan,
I feel the same way you do. I have always worried about individual
rights--but I don't think it is just a conservative position. Unions
have fought for the rights of individuals, human rights groups have
fought for the rights of individuals--I think it is an American ideal
that the conservatives have just labeled as theirs.
You will find one conservative group fighting hard for individual
student rights--especially in testing: the Eagle Forum. Here is a
reference to a page that has been instrumental in my fight against the
tests in Nevada: FERPA/Grassley Amendment
The information on this page may be helpful in knowing ways in which we
can protect student rights in the classroom. It refers particularly to
a Nevada law, but it makes reference to the federal FERPA laws,
specifically, the Grassley Amendment. There is teeth there because the
Hatch Act connects federal funding of schools with the Grassley
Amendment.
I hope it is helpful.
We must remember that no person is born Democrat, Republican, or
Yesterday. We all must be vigilant for the protection of our rights and
the rights of our children, no matter our political ilk. When we find
help, information, and build healthy coalitions, we can be very strong
together. We don't have to agree on everything, but we can agree on
some things.
Michelle
