Dr. Bergeson,
I cannot express the depression I felt after attending the morning
session of the A+ Commission meeting today. The clinging attitude you
hold toward the WASL test is very frustrating! I fear that any
improvements that have been made in education in our state over the past
few years will be thrown out with the WASL water when parental protest
hits (as it surely will). Teachers are sick of WASL! Principals are sick
of WASL! Parents are sick of WASL! Children are sickened by WASL! When
I see Wassie the Whale upon entering my children's elementary school
everyday, I want to scream and throw something! It's time for the state
to buck up and admit the WASL is a dead whale or call in the Macah to
finish it off!
Are we progressive enough in Washington to forgo the trials and
tribulations that many other states have endured in the name of
unreasonable, high stakes tests? Caring parents are having their rights
stripped away with this thing, and we will not stand still for it. We
will move to private or homeschool in greater numbers as we see that the
public schools are no longer offering our children the real tools they
need. All this testing, and teaching to it, steals valuable learning time
from our children. The constant indoctrination of WASL concepts steals
our family time and requires that basic skills be taught at home. There
are many good things about reform concepts, but the WASL test is
definitely not one of them. It needs to (as Dr. Zeus told Marvin K.
Mooney) âEURoePLEASE, GO NOW!âEUR? Juanita Doyon
