Dear friends who are supporting George.

All of you, including George, are new correspondents and personalities to me
as I have only been on the Fair Test e-mail list for a week or two. So, I
may be out of line with the following communication. However, being candid
is by strength and my failure so I will proceed nonetheless regardless of
where the cyber chips fall.

First and foremost, I intend to make a modest contribution to the effort to
defend George's actions. I would still like more facts about what happened
to him and why, but measuring from what I have seen on this list, he has been
wronged for exercising his first amendment right of free speech.

I have two problems, one I have already raised with George directly, off of
this list.

The first problem is that I think he was out of line to attack a Chicago
educational activist's political associations from many years ago. I think
he would be in-line to express his criticisms of someone's political views or
actions today. I found the remarks very counter-productive. Nevertheless, I
still oppose the move to terminate George.

Second, is an issue which I am raising with you all, because this is probably
something which George had nothing to do with. When you solicit a call for
contributions, I will do what I can. However, I would prefer to contribute
to an organization that supports courageous acts in general, and is not named
after any individual. I realize that George is the one under attack, and he
is to be the beneficiary of any funds raised in this endeavor. I have always
found serious problems when we name something after a living person. It can
lead to some sort of cult of personality. I hope you will consider renaming
the project. In any event, I shall contribute what I can.

I doubt that I have made my case effectively, but I wanted to toss in these
two cents on these two issues.

Warmest greetings to one and all, and good luck with your efforts,

Steve Orel
