This is an interesting issue. I have raised the issue with a nationally
known ed reporter, who insists that until some evidence beyond anecdotal can
be assembled to buttress this criticism of high-stakes standardized testing,
he/she has no interest in reporting the story (the reporter can probably be
characterized as a supporter of testing and accountability to "expose
mediocrity", as they put it). Hard to assemble such data on a statewide
basis, particularly since those most likely to assemble it are often those
who have an interest in not seeing this story written about either. And you
can also come up with alternative excuses for teachers leaving in droves
(pay, family reasons, school colors didn't match clothes in closet, etc.)
even if you could show data.
I think the best way to put the issue in front of parents is to point to
high profile cases like Lynn Spampinato's, people who have received glowing,
official accolades from the big-shots pushing for accountability who then
resign on principle (pardon the pun).
