NINE MILE FALLS PARENTS QUESTION THE WASL
Northwest Cable News June 5, 2000

One thing is for certain next fall, students will still contine
taking washington state exams

Krem2's Isa Arnita reports

The subjectivity of the grading is a concern, The whole cost issue,
all of the costs

<Head shot Kathy Goins Concerned Parent>

Kathy Goins is just one of a handful of parents in Nine Mile Falls
who doubts the effectiveness of the Washinton exam. "I don't think
the WASL is the way to go".

4th, 7th and 10th graders are required to take the tests and they're
not doing well

Take a look at how nine mile falls 4th graders did in math: last
year. '98-99 WASL EXAMS Nine Mile Falls Math

55% 4th ---->
15% 7th ->
30% 10th-->

Only 55% of 4th graders met the state standard. 7th graders did a
lot worse with only 15% making the grade and only 30% of 10th graders
met the standard

<shot of kids at desks pulling out calculators>

and no matter where you go in the state you'll find these kinds of
test results

<shot Terry Bergeson Superintendent>

"The kids are working and working at it, and I don't want the
children to be worried about it"

State Superintendebt of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson says test
scores will improve with time and they have with several school
districts

Some of the children need more time. there are children that who will
need summer schools, there are before school programs where students
need more tutoring. (Yeah, but 70% of them???)

but parents say the upwards trends in test scores will eventually
turn around

Claire Snodgrass: "This has happened in other states where scores
have an upward trend, but then they level off, and then they actually
start dropping"

Maryland and Vermont are two examples

but washington educators say it will help students in the long run

<Bergeson>

"you gotta know how you're doing, you gotta keep working at it"

Bergeson says with better teacher training and more emphasis on the
WASL, scores will be better in just a few years

Parents like Kathy Goins will be watching every step alomg the way
