To me, it strikes a supreme note of irony that passing a state test will
guarantee you a better grade, as one of the supposed rationales offered for
the need for these tests in the first place is to put a stop to "grade
inflation". I guess what they are really saying is grade inflation is OK as
long as the teacher is not the one doing the "inflating".

Reminds me of the story of the pfc who decided to join the bomb disposal
squad. Instead of following the usual apprenticeship track to learn his
craft, he opted to take a series of multiple choice tests on explosive
devices and proper methods of defusing and disposing of bombs, screening
suspicious packages, etc. He was a good test taker and got great scores,
and soon achieved certification as a bomb disposal expert. He was doing
great until he got a call to dispose of an explosive device found on a
military base, and all of a sudden his career blew up in his face, so to
speak.
