I, for one, don't think you're being ridiculous at all.
One of my good friends started an underground newspaper at my high school.
We got a new director my senior year and he proceeded to eliminate all the
creative, innovative teachers-- including all the staff members who were
openly gay or lesbian. He also had the board of directors give himself a
pay raise... a memo to that effect was left in a copy machine to which my
buddy had access... on the adjoining table, a run down of all the salaries
of the teachers at the school. Folks close to the director but fewer years'
experience and less credentialed than others were getting bigger salaries
(with huge raises just that year) than people who'd been teaching longer and
had advanced degrees... the paper published the information.
My friend's roommate was expelled. Within a very short amount of time, he
was being written up for crazy rule infractions-- and so were his friends.
But the paper & the disciplinary actions (which included in-room confinement
for weeks at a time, save classes and meals) were supposedly completely
unrelated incidents.
I admire your courage and your clarity of purpose. These students need
*someone* to protect them-- the system ISN'T there to HELP them, that's
already been made obvious.
Is there another newspaper to which you can go? There are two in
Birmingham, right? Maybe the rival paper would print the story with the
kids remaining anonymous if you help them scoop their rival.
