This letter was printed in the Sacramento Bee on Friday, May 30, 2003. Perhaps it will help to pass AB 356, CTA's testing reform bill.

Re "Exit exam is crucial for disadvantaged students," Other Views, May 22: In proposing to deny students diplomas for their own good, Daniel Weintraub reveals an almost unbelievable arrogance.

Weintraub argues that the High School Exit Exam exposes the unequal education given to low-income and immigrant students in California. If this is true, why punish students for the state's failure to provide them an equal opportunity?

Why, in any case, assume that every student can demonstrate his or her competence on a multiple-choice test? Not everyone thinks in the same way. Every student who successfully completes all required courses is entitled to a high school diploma.
