Ummm,
I attended the Texas Assssment Conf in Austin about two weeks ago and TEA was
there. They were interested in the design of our asessments, asked for my
suggestions on how I would suggest TAAS be improved.
Now I had a number of suggestions which they liked but I would suggest that
if any of you want to give me a list oyour suggestions, I might be in a good
position to pass them on. Now seems to be the time. So send them along....

<< Dear ARNers,
Good ol' MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense Fund) is cooking up
something with the Texas legislature. I don't have all the details yet,
but I hear it's promising. I'll keep y'all posted the best I can...
In the meantime, that hotbed of progressive thinking, the small town of
Alvin, Texas, (oh, I'm laughing, I'm hurting myself) is buzzing with the
news that a small group of citizens is standing up to say enough is
enough. One of the Gabby Moms' kids came home from school with a note
from his teacher stating "thanks for supporting us." Teachers are asking
for buttons!!! You ought to see the note our district sent home last
week. It is very defensive of the curriculum and makes a point of
stating that our district follows the state guidelines. Send me your fax
numbers if you want a copy...
Apparently somebody knows we exist.
A week from Saturday I'll be finished with our community college
musical, which means no more four-hour rehearsals at night, along with
the backaches that come from sitting on a piano bench in a dusty
orchestra pit for long periods of time. Then I have a week off and a
little time to devote to Resistance work, not to mention myself (road
trip to meet the Lousiana Resistance, maybe, if I can contact them?).
Some of you have asked for copies of newscasts, TAAS prep worksheets,
and that sort of thing (Susan O. and Gabie come to mind immediately).
Just send me a friendly reminder and I'll get it to you.
It's not been easy for many people who've kept their kids in public
school here. I don't know how many people I've talked to that tell me
they're thinking about taking their kids out, or that they wish they
could, or that they've already done it. What does that tell you about
the effects of the corporate takeover of our public schools? Our kids
don't benefit when their schools have been sold to the highest bidder.
The Texas Resistance has had some hard times lately. I don't want to
share personal information on a public discussion forum, but please
think about us...
Washington folks, we're glad you're OK.
Rumor has it that Houston teachers want to puke every time they hear
about Rod Paige. So spread the news that we're planning a rally of some
sort Sunday, April 22, 3:00 PM at the HISD administration building (if
the location changes we'll certainly let people know).
In Solidarity,
Parents United to Reform TAAS Testing
