Dear Teresa:

Education isn't the only place where the corruption of humanitarian values is
taking place. If education is someone's "calling," we've got to encourage
them to pursue their goals, but to do so as student-centered advocates and
activists. I couldn't imagine a more exciting field to be in right now, than
education. The more the standardized war machine rears its ugly head, the
more I am inspired to work with the people on this list to stand up for the
students and defend the spirit and foundations of education. If we lose the
battle, and many of us have been losing (just got beat again today, according
to the news, which I shall post to the list in a different subject), we also
gain new lessons and insights which actually affirm our beliefs and advances
the cause of education. One thing is for sure: If we don't stand up as an
opposition, we are all sunk. So, I hope you and others on this list feel the
dignity and integrity of standing up for what you believe in. I think it is
truly an honor to be engaged in this fight against standards at this time in
history.

Hey.....can you imagine not only pursuing the field of education, but doing
so in this land of enlightenment.....Birmingham, Alabama? One thing is for
sure, it makes you get up in the morning........just to make sure you are
still alive.

Hang in there.

Warmest greetings to Teresa, and one and all,

Steve Orel
