I guess I'm trying to understand where "context" and "authenticity" come in as differentiators of phonics and whole language approaches. Art

Try not to lose track of the point. Phonics-first advocates do not favor
teaching sight words out of context. There are teachers who do this (a
holdover from the look-say instruction of the early fifties). Sometimes
phonics proponents blame whole language for this practice. Whole language
practitioners want to make clear that they are not responsible for wasting
student time in this way, that in fact drilling isolated words makes no
more sense than drilling the sounds of isolated letters. Don't take too
much time arguing for a practice no expert on any side defends.
