CHRISTINA KESSEL; Tacoma As an educator who has taught in our state for the
past 10 years, I want to balance the recent editorial comments that have
given the public the impression that K-12 educators have been given or are
due "generous" raises. My dictionary defines generous as bountiful, abundant
or ample. In my mind, a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) does not meet that
definition. The News Tribune has repeatedly referred to the September 2002
COLA of 3.6 percent as generous. When my paycheck buys the same goods and
services as it did the year before, I do not call that financial condition
"generous." I call it keeping my nose above water.Another "generous" bread
crumb that educators were tossed a few years ago was the "raise" that
required teachers to work three additional days. Framing salary schedules as
generous or as raises when they remain the same or require more work is
double-talk.Some budget trimming and cuts are necessary. I suggest finishing
the budget and legislative session on time. I also suggest skipping the WASL
testing this spring.CHRISTINA KESSEL; Tacoma© The News Tribune
