All teachers in our district received a 7 page, single-spaced letter from the district last week stating that the board's official position is to,"notify students and parent/guardians of the importance of these achievement tests (BP6162.51)." The remaining pages threaten teachers, who are perceived to be encouraging opt outs, with "discipline and possible reporting to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing," with liberal parenthetical use of "cf," "ccr," "education code," and "bp," followed by many numerals. Someone's attornies have been busy. I heard from one teacher in our district already who had been distributing, in response to parent concern and request, forms to sign for opt out. The teacher is afraid of disciplinary proceedings now. 'Tis the season when things will be heating up...
