In fact, I've been on the list for several years.  I find it a valuable source
of information and inspiration, but have seldom felt the need to weigh in
(though I have done so several times over the years).

The problem of respectful discourse in the public domain is one that interests
me quite a lot.  I am greatly influenced in this by the work of the
communitarians (though I don't call myself one) and their journal, "The
Responsive Community."

I do appreciate the many invitations I have received, both on the list and
privately, to stay connected.  And having grown up with 9 siblings, my skin is
plenty tough!

But I remain puzzled by the vitriol inspired by my view that assessment and
instruction should be linked and informing each other.

Anyway, thanks to all who have been kind in the wake of all this.
