Big bang theory enables us to infer the age of the universe (over 13 billion years) from the observed red shift in starlight. Creationist believers in an earth that's only a few thousand years old, therefore, want to cast doubt on the big bang as well as on plate tectonics (which offers an alternative to Noah's flood as an explanation for marine fossils on mountain tops).

Evidence from mitochondrial DNA is used to estimate the length of time since any two cell lineages (say, humans and chimpanzees) shared a common ancestor. Perhaps this is why cell theory is also under attack.
