I did a workshop for a group of elementary science teachers last week
and took a whole bunch of picture books so that teachers could see some
of the ways in which narrative can provide a pathway into science
lessons. One of the picture books was Tree of Life by Peter Sis, which
is a wonderfully rich book about the life of Darwin. I thought teachers
would grab that one first. But no one did. When I asked one of the
coordinators about it they said that elementary teachers in the area
would not touch anything to do with evolution because it was too
controversial. My university is situated in a very very conservative and
somewhat theocratic region of the state. It is amazing to me how this
plays out, how it colors curriculum and classroom practice.
